NEW SUPERYACHT DECKHAND COURSE FOR 2024
We are thrilled to introduce our NEW Superyacht Deckhand Courses. A selection of training packages to arm you with everything you need for work onboard a superyacht as a deck hand!
Working on Superyachts certainly has its attractions! Travelling around the world, enjoying great weather, working on outstanding boats, in a glamourous industry and usually for a good salary, food and board too. That said, it is hard work and you need some basic qualifications before you will even be considered to step on board, to keep you and others safe.
Some qualifications are a legal requirement and some will help you stand out from the multiple applicants and give you a better chance of landing your dream job.
WHAT IS A DECKHAND?
A deckhand or deck hand, is a crucial crew member responsible for a wide range of tasks onboard a vessel to ensure smooth operation, general maintenance, cleanliness, safety and comfort of passengers. They tend to work under the supervision of the ships officer, working both on deck and below. Deckhands onboard luxury yachts and superyachts (yachts over 24 meters long) require a high standard of customer service to keep guests happy and often technical skill and physical fitness to assist with water sports such as diving, PWC (Jet Ski), paddleboards and operating the yachts tenders (powerboats to take guests ashore).
Deckhands assist with navigation and standing watch, monitoring weather conditions and looking out for obstacles. Mooring, anchoring, safety and emergency duties are also part of the requirements as well. So key attributes are physical fitness, attention to detail, customer service and being a great team member.
Next, to add to the attributes, is the maritime education and training needed, which is where we step in. We have spent a lot of time visiting Superyachts and know exactly what it takes to be an excellent deck hand and how to stand out from the crowd in order to set sail with a career onboard.

WHAT DOES our SUPERYACHT DECKHAND COURSE INCLUDE?
We have put together 3 deckhand training packages, bronze, silver and gold. Our 3 tier packages are designed to include everything needed to start your deck hand career, whilst recognising the differing level of requirements for varying positions onboard and the qualifications which some may already hold.
Powerboating and PWC (Jet Ski) courses are an essential, as crew are often required to take guests from the yacht to and from the shore. This is usually onboard a small powerboat called a tender. Additionally deck hands and crew are often called on to provide safety boat cover while others are in the water, as well as to tow and manoeuvre powerboats and PWCs too.
Our tender operator course is a step on from powerboating level 2 course and arms you with understanding of the techniques required to act as tender, carrying passengers to and from shore by day and by night.
SRC (RYA Short Range Certificate marine radio course) will authorise you to use a marine VHF radio with digital selective calling onboard a British vessel fitted with radio equipment. The course covers issuing and responding to mayday alerts as well as other vital information to help keep you safe afloat.
STCW (standards of training, certification and watchkeeping) are a set of basic safety courses also available to add to any of our packages. We work with a local certified provider, who covers basic fire-fighting, first aid, personal survival techniques, personal safety, social responsibility and security awareness.
DO I NEED ANY QUALIFICATIONS BEFORE I ATTEND THE DECKHAND COURSE?
As long as you are physically fit enough to complete the course, there are no prerequisites for the bronze deckhand course. You can start from the beginning.
